Joie Davidow, episode 204

When I was a senior in college in New York, I had a long-distance relationship with a girl in Malibu.  I came out to visit her after graduation and Joie, who was the editor of LA Weekly at the time, was out of town and offered me her house in the Hollywood hills.  I had an amazing, life changing trip: pristine beaches, dolphins, canyons, mountains, endless freeways and desert, it was an eye-opening experience to say the least.  As a lifelong East Coaster Los Angeles may as well have been a different planet… now it’s home.

I always thought Joie was cool.  In my mind, she was always ‘a friend of my mom so I had a childlike admiration for her that persisted into adulthood.  It persisted until I recorded this episode.  I didn’t know how erudite and articulate she was until I interviewed her on the podcast.  Now I have a grown-up admiration for her as well.

One of the reasons I started this show was to get to know some people in my life better.  In this episode, you can hear me learn in real time that someone I’ve known my whole life is even more brilliant than I thought they were.
